As a public service, the University of Pittsburgh in collaboration with the Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh conducts faculty/staff blood drives over the course of the year. All staff, faculty and students are encouraged to participate! Notification of blood drive dates, times and locations are advertised in advance by the Community Relations office.
The Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh (CBB) is a non-profit organization founded in 1951 by a group of Pittsburgh doctors. CBB started as a 14-person operation, collecting just 5,000 units of blood and serving 7 hospitals. Today, the CBB employs over 300 and collect and test over 160,000 units annually and serves over 40 hospitals in Western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia.
The CBB offers several different programs for those interested in donating. When you donate any blood product, you are automatically a part of the "Community Blood Program." By being part of the program, you save up to three lives with each donation! The University of Pittsburgh is also involved in the "Partners for Life" program to encourage Pitt employees to donate 4 times per year. Pitt employees are also involved in the "G.O.L.D. Club" which stands for "Gift of Life Donor."
Please bring ID with you on the day of the blood drive. Proper ID is required to
donate blood. A Central Blood Bank or military ID, driver's license or employee
badge with picture and full name are all approved forms of ID. Birth Certificate
along with a picture ID that includes the donor's full name will also be accepted.
