The Faculty & Staff In Service to Community, formerly the Pitt Volunteer Pool was founded in 1991 as an affiliation of staff and faculty who have expressed an interest in voluntary service to non-profit organizations in the Pittsburgh area. The work of the Faculty & Staff in Service to Community is a fulfillment of the University's belief that helping our neighbors is simply the right thing to do. It is also being done in the belief that as our neighbors prosper we, as an institution, benefit. We always accept ideas for new projects from among you, the University employees, who make the Faculty & Staff In Service to Community a success.

Today the Faculty & Staff In Service to Community is an association of nearly 2,500 faculty and staff who primarily work in teams on over 100 projects annually, volunteering over 10,000 hours of community service. Among the local non-profit organizations served are: Global Links, the Salvation Army, Pittsburgh Aids Task Force, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank and Family House. The Faculty & Staff In Service to Community also coordinates the University's participation in regional voluntary service efforts such as: The United Way Day of Caring, the Pitt Partnership for Food and blood drives in collaboration with the Central Blood Bank of Pittsburgh.

The Faculty & Staff In Service to Community also coordinates the University's participation in national service projects such as the American Heart Association's National Wear Red Month, the Salvation Army's Christmas Day Dinner at Pitt. The Pitt Volunteer Pool is also organized to respond to emergency needs such as those created by Hurricane Katrina nationally and local flooding disasters as well.

Remember, your participation in the Faculty & Staff In Service to Community is not only a way of helping others; but serves as an excellent means of getting to know your co-workers in a whole new way. to keep you abreast of volunteer opportunities; volunteers receive the monthly Faculty & Staff In Service to Community Activites Update.
