Christmas Day at Pitt

Faculty and Staff in Service to Community seek partnerships with community organizations and participates in programs that will have measurable impact in the neighborhoods they serve. The primary resource the University of Pittsburgh brings to community service is the volunteerism of our faculty and staff through the Volunteer Pool. For many years Christmas Day dinners for needy individuals and families have been sponsored by local hotels in the City of Pittsburgh in collaboration with the Salvation Army of Western Pennsylvania. In 2006, one of the hotels withdrew from this program because of major renovations. The Salvation Army asked the University to fill in for that hotel and we agreed to sponsor “Christmas Day at Pitt” for needy individuals and families and has done so since that time. Faculty, staff and their families from Pitt and Sodexho give of their time on Christmas Day to this event. In 2011, the University served over 1200 meals, an increase of over 200, to needy individuals and families.
