Parking Meter & Street Closing Process
The University of Pittsburgh and the City of Pittsburgh have implemented a new policy for street closures and parking spaces. This policy is designed to reimburse the City for any lost revenue from approved street closure(s) and/or taking parking meters out of service for an approved event. In order to coordinate the implementation of this policy internally, the Community and Governmental Relations office is the designated University administrative unit to process requests by departments to the appropriate governmental entity for approval. Therefore, we have developed a standard procedure to be followed by all units seeking street closure permits and permits to take parking meters out of service. Please give careful consideration to the need for, and extent of, your request as requests are granted only for appropriate purposes.
Street Closure(s) – Any University department, unit or affiliate that seeks approval to temporarily close a city street for a University sponsored event shall notify the Community and Governmental Relations office in writing at least 35 days prior to the date of the event by completing the attached form so that proper University approvals can be obtained. If the request is appropriate, Community and Governmental Relations will complete the appropriate City of Pittsburgh form to seek a permit to temporarily close the street. The City of Pittsburgh is now strictly enforcing their 30 day limit, so please contact the Community & Governmental Relations Office in the beginning of your planning process. Similarly, this office will notify the requesting department as to whether the request has been approved or denied. The fee charged by the City for permits is $125.00. To cover these costs, the requesting department must provide an account number to the Community and Governmental Relations office for that purpose.
Taking Meter(s) Out of Service – Any University department, unit or affiliate that seeks approval to take parking meters out of service shall notify the Community and Governmental Relations office in writing at least 35 days prior to the date of the event, by completing the attached form. If the request is appropriate, the Community and Governmental Relations office will seek approval from the Pittsburgh Parking Authority (the PPA requires 30 day notice for a meter variance) and will notify you when action is taken on the request. The cost of taking a meter out of service is $20 per meter per day. Departments must provide an account number to the Governmental Relations office for that purpose. If your request is approved, the University of Pittsburgh Police will obtain the necessary materials to post signs and bag meters in advance of the event.
You may submit your request via our on-line form.
